The Sinatra Group

1:11 pm

One of the best Saturday Night Live skits ever aired was the one with Phil Hartman (RIP) as Frank Sinatra, and other regulars (plus guest host Sting) as other performers. It was modeled after The McLaughlin Group, but much, much funnier. Among Sinatra’s “guest” were Billy Idol, Sinead O’Connor, and Luther Campbell (2 Live Crew frontman). This was classic SNL. Heh…when Sinatra referred to O’Connor as “Uncle Fester” and “Cue Ball” — and the sneer on “Billy Idol’s” face (Sting) — and Steve & Eydie sucking up to Frankie…good stuff. Do you remember this skit?

  1. YES! I am laughing right now just from the memory of it! Sting was hilarious as Billy Idol.

  2. What a coincidence! I ordered The Best of Phil Hartman (gawd, I loved him!) from Netflix and watched it a week or so ago.

Gosh, I miss Phil. Didja know that he designed album covers for Poco? (Please tell me you know who Poco is.) LOL

  3. That skit was incredible. Phil designed album covers for Poco? The reincarnation of Buffalo
Springfield? He was also a great Captain Carl on Pee Wee.

  4. Here’s the album that I have, that Phil did the design for, and a very special song for me on it is “Spellbound.”

  5. From the “Jam Actor Database

As a graphic artist in the early ’70s, he designed over 40 rock album covers, including the classic white Poco album. “The only piece I have up in my office,” Hartman told me during a 1996 interview at the Beverly Hills Four Season Hotel.

WHY I have this sort of trivia jammed in my brain I’ll never know. I believe it is why I can’t count my fingers and toes and come up with the same number twice. Trivia pushed out all the math!

  6. “Next issue: this crap with M-TV. With the nudity and all. What is this crap? Sinbad O’Connor.”
    Brilliant!

  8. My favorite Sinatra SNL skit was Joe Piscopo as the Chairman of the Board and Eddie Murphy as Stevie Wonder and they were recording a duet album. When they sang Ebony and Ivory, “You are black and I am white.” I fell out-o-my chair laffin!

  9. The link you provided has a bowdlerized version of that skit. In the original, Sinatra disses O’Connor by telling here that “I had 2 Grammys when you were still a twinkle in some drunken mick’s bloodshot eye!”
