First Wives Club

Hildy Wings Her Purse At Walter! Three Cary Grant movies: “My Favorite Wife” and “The Philadelphia Story” and “His Girl Friday.” If you’ve seen them, you probably love them, too. But have you noticed something odd about all three of them? I mentioned it once before, a couple years ago: in all three of them, Cary Grant’s character is vexed/captivated/etc by his previous wife. In “My Favorite Wife,” his presumed-dead wife shows up after being stranded on an island for seven years, on the exact day that Grant’s character has finally remarried. In “The Philadelphia Story,” he doesn’t exactly set out to re-capture the love of his first wife, but he succeeds anyway. And in “His Girl Friday,” he uses all of his charm, craftiness, and resources to woo his first wife away from her soon-to-be-husband. Quite a trio of films — and all released within a year or two of each other. Quite an interesting undercurrent to three of his best movies.

  1. I love My Favorite Wife! That is one of my all time favorites. :) Glad to know there are others out there who enjoy great films.

  2. These days, such an unhealthy fascination with one’s ex-wife would result in a restraining order.
