More Than Ordinary, But…
I dimly recall that when the movie “The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen” was released two years ago, it was savaged by the critics and did only fair business at the box office. So it was with a very jaundiced eye that I watched it on a movie channel the other night, but you know what? It was pretty good. Yes, there were some plot holes and logic gaps that you could drive Nemo’s sub through, but overall, it was an entertaining film, which is more than you can say about the vast majority of movies.
Dorian Gray as an “immortal?” Sure, why not? Mina Harker as a sexy vampiric beast? OK. Dr Jekyll as a nerdy scientist, with his alter-ego Mr Hyde as an uber-Hulk? Sure made better visuals than the real Jekyll/Hyde story. And Special Agent Tom Sawyer? Uh…well, now you’re stretching it…although I can see how his character was being set-up to replace the nominal leader of the LXG in a sequel. Captain Nemo probably was my favorite character; he was noble and brave, like the other characters, but he also exhibited enough mystery to make him stand out as worthy of his own movie.
The f/x were great, the characters were all sufficiently interesting, if not completely “extraordinary,” and the plot was…OK, it just flat-out required major suspensions of disbelief at least a couple of times. I understand that “LXG” was based on a comic book graphic novel, but I’ve never much cared for those, so I enjoyed the movie strictly at face-value, with no knowledge of which characters were true to the original and such. I give “The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen” a 3-star rating.

It’s worth pointing out that the graphic novel “League” stands well on it’s own merits. The film, in comparison….well let’s just say it’s like saying Kenny G is as good as Miles Davis. The two shouldn’t be allowed to share the same sentence. Honestly, though it’s live-action, the film seems like a (bad) cartoon next to the original.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (the original classic) was creepy; but, in a good way.
