Zoe Baby Pix!

You asked for ‘em, you got ‘em - it’s pictures of our newest family member, Zoe Baby! So far we’ve learned that she enjoys being curled in a ball, has a fondness for the pink polka-dot blanket, and likes water sports (drinking from the faucet and playing in the sink). The expression on her face in the upper-right picture - weird, huh? When we set the blanket up for her, she buried her face in it and seemed to be “inhaling” the scent, and then she pulled her face up with her mouth half-open and her nose twitching for a few seconds. She repeated that three or four times. Odd, or something that other cats do?

  2. Yes, other cats do that — they’re “tasting” a scent — usually something intriguing left by another critter.

    She’s very cute, congratulations!

  5. Cats possess a “Jacobsen’s Organ,” as do snakes. It is a vomeronasal organ located behind the front teeth, and is used to enhance the feline’s already formidable sense of smell. Opening his mouth slightly enables him to bring in more air and enlarges the ducts in the nasal cavity.
When your cat “smiles” with it’s mouth slightly open, that is called the Flehman response, and means that the Jacobsen’s organ is at work:)

  9. […] Until Decar and the CowCat (and now Zoe Baby, as of two weeks ago) entered our lives several years ago, it never crossed my mind that I would ever own a cat. Sure, kittens were cute, but cats? What kind of grown man would ever choose a cat over a faithful dog? But now I’m sold on cats: they are truly remarkable creatures. I do still plan to have a dog, someday, but for now, cats are just right. In that spirit, here are a few quotes about cats that a friend forwarded to me… Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a function. –Unknown […]
