Why Choose Wordpress?

10:45 pm

Most of you know that I have used or at least tried many of the blogging tools out there…began with Blogger in 2000, then moved to GreyMatter in 2001, then Movable Type in 2002, and then in 2004 I finally settled on Wordpress. And in between all of that, I tinkered with Serendipity, Vox, and a few others. But I’m hooked on Wordpress. It’s fast, simple, tweakable, and just plain cool. And now Krispyblogs has come up with ten reasons to use Wordpress that might convince you to switch, too. Among them: millions of themes (well, thousands at least), thousands of plugins (well, hundreds at least), and of course it is free. Take it from me - an experienced, professional, trustworthy blogger* - you can’t go wrong with Wordpress.

* well…at least as experienced as any other blogger; professional in the sense that I don’t blog in my pajamas; and trustworthy at least as far as you can throw me, assuming you’re a linebacker for a pro NFL team

UPDATE in response to Myrhaf’s question: From the Wordpress Codex: Users of WordPress 2.2 and above can import from Blogger. Earlier versions cannot import from Blogger because “New Blogger” was released by Google, invalidating all the old importers. Only WordPress 2.2 and later has support for “New Blogger”. If you haven’t already, you must be using New Blogger and a Google Account on Blogger. If you are still using Old Blogger, the importer will not work.

And if that isn’t an option for you, you can always establish a new blog, and provide a link back to your Blogger entries as “Archives.”

Hope that helps.

  1. If you switch from Blogger to Wordpress, can you easily transfer your archives and everything on your blog?

  2. Well, I’ve used WP before; at the time, it was OK, but I couldn’t get the privacy features from it that I wanted, so I went with Expression Engine and haven’t looked back.

WP would be great, except for the fact that when I try to comment on any of them (including yours), I get an internal server error upon submit - every single time. Now, whether this is a WP issue, or a server issue, or both, I have no idea….I hate, however, that it deters me from commenting on a lot of sites that I really enjoy, and yes, including yours. :)

  3. Case in point: (Sorry, in a hurry and couldn’t email….delete this if necessary!!)

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@cedant.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

FastCGI: comm with (dynamic) server “/usr/local/etc/cgi-bin/php-fastcgi” aborted: (first read) idle timeout (30 sec)

  4. I totally love Wordpress. I’ve been using it for a few years now, and it does everything I need it to do. I’m now starting to design themes (none up yet, but will have some soon).

    Oh, and hi :D

  5. […] Last week I learned that I won a free copy of “Wordpress For Dummies” (by Lisa Sabin-Wilson) over at ProBlogger - cool! Can’t wait to get my hands on it - I’m a True Believer in Wordpress, and have been using it on all of my sites since 2002. It’s great to collect and read tips and tools all over the web, but to have all of it packaged up into one convenient book will be awesome. And since I’m a dummy, it’s a great fit. […]
